Continuing education resolution defeated

A resolution asking the ELCA to establish a minimum continuing education requirement for pastors was defeated, 266-177.

“As people in ministry we should have the same kind of accountability as those in other professions when it comes to continuing education,” said Pastor Larry Smoose, who submitted the resolution to the assembly.

The resolution encouraged the ELCA Vocation and Education unit to study the practice of continuing education with the intention of requiring all rostered leaders to participate in annual continuing education similar to requirements in other professions.

Questions arose whether or not requirements would restrict continuing education to approved academic programs and whether the conversation about continuing education should occur in the local congregation rather than be legislated.

“This conversation would happen better in congregations between pastors and their mutual ministry committees,” said Pastor Tom Lang, New Hanover, Gilbertsville.

“The needs of my congregation and my call may be different than others,” said Pastor Frank Sayford, Trinity, Fort Washington.
