The 2008 Assembly of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod passed a resolution to ask the ELCA to begin the process of developing a social statement concerning individuals with disabilities.
“Asking the church to study this will force us to look at and study the issue and begin to understand that while ramps and elevators are good things, they don’t change attitudes,” said Pastor Stephen Weisser, speaking in favor of the resolution to memorialize the ELCA to begin the process to create a social statement on disability.
“When we memorialize, what we are doing is requesting that the ELCA Assembly consider this for adoption,” said Pastor Larry Smoose, chair of the Committee on Reference and Counsel. “Assemblies talk to assemblies,” he said.
