Reflecting our diversity at Churchwide Assembly

After noting with dismay that elections for clergy representatives to the 2009 ELCA Assembly did not include persons of color or language other than English, the Assembly took two actions to address the imbalance in the delegation.

  • The Assembly opted not to cast ballots for one position in the delegation, so that the Synod Council could appoint a person of color or language other than English.
  • The Assembly directed the Synod Council that, should one of the elected representatives recuse themselves or become unable to serve, they would be replaced by someone of color or language other than English.
